Tuition and workshops

Working with clay is great fun and very satisfying. It is an absorbing and relaxing process - but be warned, it can become quite addictive!

I am a teacher by profession and offer well structured tuition. I have Product and Public Liability Insurance arranged through the Craft Potters Association; this offers cover for all courses, workshops and craft events I organise. Health and safety guidance is issued to all who attend a pottery course or workshop.

Tuition

I offer tuition to individuals or groups of two people at Raintree Pottery and am happy to teach both beginners and those wishing to hone their existing potting skills. I teach handbuilding - starting with pinch pots and moving on to coiling and slab building. A whole range of decorative techniques are also covered. Many extremely accomplished and famous ceramicists only use handbuilidng techniques, which enable them to be completely creative in terms of form.

I suggest a basic course of ten x 2 hour sessions for beginners, for which I charge £200. This includes the cost of one bag of student clay, glazes and all firing. An additional charge (at cost) is made for extra bags of clay, the use of more expensive specialist clay and glazing/firing the extra work produced. I also offer taster packages of two x 2 hour sessions at £45, which allows beginners to make a pot, have it bisque fired and then return to glaze it at a later date.

Note: Although I have a potter’s wheel for my own occasional use, I do not teach throwing. It takes many hours of practice to become adept at throwing pots and the inevitable disasters result in a lot of clay recycling, which I have neither the space or facilities to undertake.

Workshops, demonstrations and lectures

Likewise, please enquire if you would like me to come into your community to run a workshop, or give a demonstration or lecture. I am also able to offer printmaking workshops.
